A New Mexico woman thought she could turn public opinion against a police officer who caught her leaving her dog in a hot vehicle. Instead, her own complaint ended up backfiring in a big way.
The woman reached out to KOB News, asking them to investigate what she described as unfair and “abusive” treatment from the officer. Her claim was simple: she said he forced her to sit in the same hot car she’d left her dog in as a form of punishment.
But when the news station dug into the story, they found the officer had been wearing a body camera the entire time. The footage told a very different version of events than the one the woman had described.
The incident began when Officer Vincent Kreischer spotted a dog sitting alone inside a parked truck in a grocery store parking lot in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Outside temperatures were already climbing past 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and he went looking for the owner.
When he found her, the woman insisted she’d only stepped away for about 10 minutes and pushed back on his concerns, arguing that it really wasn’t that hot outside. Kreischer, however, calculated that the inside of that truck would have reached roughly 114 degrees Fahrenheit (about 45.5°C) in that amount of time.
According to the officer, the woman laughed off his concerns and seemed indifferent to what her dog was going through. He described her attitude as “callous and carefree” when it came to her pet’s safety. That’s when he decided enough was enough — he began writing her a citation and asked her to wait inside her own truck since, in her words, the heat wasn’t a big deal.
“You can wait in the truck and close the door, you know, since it’s not that hot,” Kreischer told her.
He later explained his reasoning: “She gives me an attitude from word one, and then she doesn’t want to close the door. So I’m like, ‘Oh, but it’s OK if your dog does.'”
In the end, the lesson landed without needing another word. If a person isn’t willing to sit in a scorching, closed-up vehicle for even a few minutes, no dog should be expected to either.
